Reasons for orthodontic retreatment

01.  Neglecting retainer placement and follow-up care 

The most common reason for orthodontic retreatment is not wearing retainers or lack of follow-up care. Teeth constantly move and change. Especially right after orthodontic treatment, they have a strong tendency to return to their original irregular positions. For this reason, it is best to wear fixed and removable retainers faithfully as instructed by your dentist for at least 6 months after treatment.

02. Unsatisfactory results, or teeth that have become protruded

Moving your teeth too far inward may result in an overly sunken appearance and make you look older, leaving you dissatisfied with the outcome. You may also consider orthodontic retreatment if the result is not close enough to your goals or expectations.

03. Changes in tooth alignment due to growth or oral diseases after orthodontic treatment

If you had orthodontic treatment as a child to prevent severe abnormal jaw growth, your teeth may shift as you continue to grow after treatment. You may also lose teeth due to severe tooth decay or periodontal disease. If the gaps are left untreated for a long time, your teeth may shift and you may need orthodontic retreatment.

04. Improper function and bad habits

Teeth move easily under steady pressure. Repeated habits such as pushing your teeth with your tongue or sucking your fingers may shift your teeth. During orthodontic treatment, the appliance helps prevent your teeth from shifting due to these habits. However, after the appliance is removed, these habits may cause the problem to return, and orthodontic retreatment may be needed.
