It refers to a position toward the front.
A protruding mouth or retroclined teeth fall under Class II malocclusion, which also affects the shape of the lips and can negatively affect facial appearance. Class II malocclusion occurs when there is not enough space for the teeth, and it can also occur when the lower jaw is small or set back, as with a retruded chin, or when the upper teeth protrude.
Protruding teeth are usually caused by genetics, but habits such as finger-sucking, tongue thrusting, and mouth breathing can also cause problems over time. In many cases, tooth extraction is needed to create space for orthodontic treatment. The front teeth are then moved into the space left by the extractions, gradually closing it and moving the teeth back.
