Candidates for surgical orthodontics
 01   Underbite

This type of facial imbalance is common among East Asians and is the reason for most cases of surgical orthodontic treatment in Korea. Depending on the size and shape of the upper and lower jaws and how the teeth fit together, good results may require surgery on the lower jaw alone or on both the upper and lower jaws. An underbite is often accompanied by problems with facial length or asymmetry, which can also be addressed through surgery.

 02   Facial asymmetry

The length or shape of the lower jaw often differs from side to side. In cases of severe facial asymmetry, the upper jaw may also be tilted, in addition to an abnormality in the lower jaw. Orthodontic treatment alone may not be enough to correct facial asymmetry, so jaw surgery is often performed as well.

 03   Receded chin (retrognathia)

There are several reasons why your mouth may look prominent. One common cause is protruding teeth, which may respond well to orthodontic treatment alone. Sometimes, however, the teeth do not protrude, but a severely recessed lower jaw makes the mouth look prominent. If the lower jaw is severely recessed, surgery to move it forward may be needed. A detailed examination can determine whether surgery before orthodontic treatment is an option.

04   Severe protruding mouth (bimaxillary protrusion)

If your teeth are at a normal angle but your upper and lower jaws protrude, or if you want to shorten your orthodontic treatment, you may consider orthodontic treatment combined with surgery. As with treatment involving tooth extraction, 4 premolars, 2 upper and 2 lower, are extracted. Instead of moving the teeth to close these spaces, surgery is used to move the jaws back. Orthodontic treatment after surgery is then used to achieve a precise bite.

 05   Long face, short face

Surgical orthodontic treatment may be needed if your face is unusually long or short, if your gums show too much or too little due to your jaw structure, or if your upper and lower front teeth do not touch severely.

Treatment by an orthodontic specialist

Surgical orthodontic treatment requires careful consideration of not only tooth position but also jawbone structure and facial balance. Because it is a complex treatment, detailed orthodontic plans must be made for before and after surgery to achieve satisfactory results. An orthodontist can systematically diagnose and plan treatment for a range of bite problems, jaw joint issues, and jawbone problems. This can support more precise diagnosis and predictable treatment, especially in complex cases such as surgical orthodontic treatment.
